This article explains how to create a quiz in Canvas using New Quizzes, add specific questions from a bank, and randomize questions in a Classic Quiz. It walks users through each step, from building the bank to inserting selected questions into a quiz within a course module.

Creating a New Quiz

In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignment page.
Click the Add Quiz button.
In the Choose a Quiz Engine screen, select the New Quizzes option. To save your quiz engine selection for your course, check the Remember my choice for this course checkbox.
Click the Submit button. Note: You can reset your quiz engine choice from the Quiz Options menu at any time.
In the Assignment Name field, enter the name of your quiz. Enter quiz details, the total points possible, select the assignment group, and choose how the grade is displayed to students.
To remove this quiz from final grade calculations, click the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade checkbox.
In the Assign area, you can assign the quiz to students, add due dates, and add availability dates.
To save your quiz, click the Save button. To save and publish your quiz, click the Save & Publish button. Clicking the Save or Save & Publish button returns you to the page where you opened the quiz.

Note: The points possible set on the assignment details page is the total points possible for the quiz. Points set per question determine points earned for correct answers. Points earned for correct answers are totaled and divided by the sum of the total question points for the quiz. That percentage is then used to calculate the final score based on the total points on the assignment details page.

Building the Quiz

Click the quiz title to open it. If you clicked the Save or Save & Publish button and returned to the page where you opened the quiz, you can click the Options icon (3 dots) and then click the Build link.
On the Build page, you can edit the title and description of your quiz, view your item banks, align the quiz to outcomes, preview the quiz from the student view, and navigate the quiz. Use the Rich Content Editor to format and add content to your quiz instructions.
To add content to your quiz, click the Add button.
To insert content from an item bank, click the Item Bank button. To create a new question, click the button for the question type, add stimulus content, or add text block content.
For each question, you can enter a question, question stem, and answers. You may also select options specific to the question, align the question to an outcome, and add the question to an item bank.
In the Points field, adjust the point value for the question by entering a number or clicking the arrow buttons. To add general student feedback, click the Feedback icon.
To save the question, click the Done button. Note: Essay questions do not include an answer field and must be graded manually.

When creating or editing a New Quiz, you can view the Quiz Title, the Course Navigation, and the View as Student button. Note: You can collapse the Course Navigation using the Menu icon for a more focused view.

Creating an Item Bank

Once you had added a New Quiz to your course, you will see an Item Banks link in the Course Navigation menu. You can also access Item Banks from the New Quizzes Build page.
To build a new item bank, click on the +Bank button.
Enter a Bank Name and select Create Bank.
To add a new question, click the +New button.
Select the question type, stimulus or text block content that you wish to add.
For each question, you can enter a question title, question stem, and answers.
In the Points field, adjust the point value for the question by entering a number or clicking the arrow buttons. To add general student feedback, click the Feedback icon.
To save the question, click the Done button. Note: Essay questions do not include an answer field and must be graded manually.

Using the Question Navigator

To open the Question Navigator and view your quiz, click the Expand button. In the Question Navigator, you can view each question number, question type, point total, question stem, and total question points.
To view a question in the quiz, click the question stem. You will be taken to the question within the quiz.
To manually reorder questions, click and hold the Move icon. Drag the question to where you want it to display in the quiz.
To close your quiz and return to the Quizzes page, click the Return button.

How do I migrate a Classic Quiz to New Quizzes?

You can migrate an individual quiz from Classic Quizzes to be used in New Quizzes from the Quizzes Index Page. Alternatively, you can bulk migrate multiple quizzes via course copy, IMSCC or QTI file course imports or API. Note: New Quizzes does not include a survey feature - therefore, surveys migrated from Classic Quizzes come over as standard quizzes in New Quizzes.

In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
Within the quiz you wish to migrate, click the Option icon (3 dots).
Click the Migrate option.
Once migrated, the quiz displays a New Quiz icon. To open the quiz, click the name of the quiz.

Notes:

By default, migrated quizzes are unpublished.
After migration to New Quizzes, Multiple Dropdown questions display as Fill in the Blank questions.
If a quiz is migrated multiple times, Canvas uses smart merging to decipher the question bank content that should be retained. This process helps ensure all content is retained, such as in cases where multiple users may be making edits to a quiz at the same time.

How do I add all items or a random set of questions to a New Quiz?

You can add multiple items to a quiz from an item bank in New Quizzes. These questions display in random order. Depending on the number of items you include from your item bank, students may view different questions when taking the quiz.

In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignment page.
To add all items or a random set from an item bank, find the quiz you want to open. To open New Quizzes from an existing quiz, click the Options icon and then click the Build link.
Click the Item Banks button and click the name of the item bank you wish to use.
Click the Add Add/Random button.
By default, the quiz includes all items from the item bank and will award one point per question. To edit these settings, click the Edit icon.
To use all items from the item bank, select the Use all questions option.
To randomly select a specific number of items, click the Randomly select questions option and enter the number of questions to use in the Number of questions field.
To adjust the amount of points awarded per question, enter the number in the Points per question field.
To save your settings, click the Done button.
