Preparing for Your Proctored Exam

Before taking any proctored exam, ensure you have completed the following preparations:

Technical Setup:
- Use a reliable Internet connection with a computer/laptop that has a functioning webcam and microphone.
- Update your web browser, close unnecessary applications, and test your equipment beforehand.
Environment & Materials:
- Choose a quiet, private, well-lit room and clear your testing area of unauthorized materials.
- Have a current photo ID ready and inform household members of your exam schedule.
Positioning & Appearance:
- Position yourself so your face is clearly visible to the camera and avoid wearing hats, sunglasses, or headphones unless specifically permitted by your instructor.

What are the technical minimums for using Honorlock?

Honorlock can be installed on devices meeting the following requirements:

Operating System:
- Windows 10, 11+
- MacOS 13+
- ChromeOS
Browser
- Google Chrome version 120+
Internet Speed
- 1.5 Mbps download, 750 Kbps upload

Note: Currently, the Honorlock extension is incompatible with:

Walmart Branded Camera (Onn / Surf Onn)
Amcrest Cameras
Nexigo Cameras
iPads
Tablets
Mobile phones

Full functionality of the extension can not be guaranteed when using a VPN or virtual machine.

What to expect during your proctored exam.

What to Expect:
- You may be required to show your ID to the camera, complete a room scan, and remain in view of the camera throughout the exam.
- Your screen, audio, and video will be monitored, and certain browser functions may be restricted.
What You Should Do:
- Review the specific instructions provided by your instructor regarding what is and is not allowed.
- Keep your eyes focused on your screen, and remain seated throughout the exam.
- Speak clearly if verbal responses are required.
What Not to Do:
- Do not look away from the screen for extended periods, talk to others, use unauthorized materials/devices, cover the camera, or attempt to access restricted websites or applications.

What if my course is using a different proctoring option?

ISU is in the process of transitioning all courses to Honorlock by Spring 2026. Some of your courses may still be using ProctorFree or ProctorU (Meazure Learning) during Fall 2025.

Can I take my exam on a tablet or smartphone?

No. Currently, the Honorlock extension is incompatible with:

What happens if my Internet connection drops during the exam?

Your computer system will attempt to reconnect.
The proctoring report will show that you were disconnected.
Contact Honorlock support for assistance.
If you are still unable to reconnect and finish your exam, contact your instructor.

Can I have water or snacks during my exam?

Check with your instructor for their exam policies.

What if I have accessibility accommodations?

Contact ISU Disability Services and your instructor before your exam to ensure your accommodations are properly configured with the proctoring service

Are there locations on campus I can take my proctored exam?

The ISU LIbraries offer private study rooms on each campus (Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Meridian) that you can reserve online in advance. You will need to provide your own laptop or Chromebook to take your exam in one of these rooms, as computers are not provided.
