Box enables you have retention policies applied to your data within Box.

Description

If you're a content owner, Box enables you to have retention policies applied to your data within Box. These policies can be applied to Folders, Classifications, or Metadata.

 

During the retention period, content cannot be permanently deleted

Requesting Retention Policy

How to Request a Retention Policy be applied to your files

  1. To request a new retention policy or add folders to your policy request here: Box Data Retention Request

Note: Application of retention policies is not self-service. A request will be needed to create and apply. Please consider a master folder, Classification, or known metadata that you will need to retain.

Retention Time Period

The owner of a retention policy can specify the amount of time content should be retained.

Time Period Options

  • 30 Days
  • 60 Days
  • 90 Days
  • 1 Year
  • 3 Years
  • 6 Years
  • 10 Years
  • Indefinite*
  • Custom

*Note: Once a retention policy is set to Indefinite, it cannot be modified

Apply Retention Policy To:

Specify how this retention policy should be applied to content.
  • Content in Specific Folders
  • Content with specific Metadata
  • Content with Specific Classifications

Note: Additional information about Retention policies

Disposition (what should happen after time ends?)

Specify the disposition action that should take place after the content has been retained for the specified time period.
Disposition Action
  • None
  • Permanently Delete Content
    • Optional: Allow folder owners and co-owners to extend the deletion Date

Notification

Select managed users who will receive a weekly disposition email notification. This email will remind them about files with retention periods scheduled to expire within the next 14 days.
