Microsoft Word Running Slow

Cause
Microsoft Word's performance can deteriorate and significantly slow down if bloated with add-on software or running on dated or inadequate hardware.
Resolution
Disable hardware graphics acceleration
  1. Open Microsoft Word 
  2.  Select File
  3. Select Options
  4. Select Advanced and scroll down to Display
  5. Check "Disable hardware graphics acceleration."
  6. Select OK and Restart Office.
Delete Normal.dotm File
  1. Open File Explorer
  2. Navigate to C:\Users\[Username]\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
  3. Delete the file labeled Normal.dotm
  4. Open Microsoft Word to create a new Normal.dotm file.
Install Updates
  1. Select Start button 
  2. Select Gear Icon
  3. Select Update & Security
  4. Select Check for updates
    • Updates will download and install
  5. Open Microsoft Word and see if it is faster after updates are installed (it might require a system restart)
Repair Office
  1. Select Start button
  2. Select Gear Icon
  3. Select Apps (For Windows 11 Users, select Apps and then Installed Apps)
  4. Locate and Select the appropriate Microsoft Office installation
  5. Select Advanced Options (For Windows 11 Users, this option can be found in the 3-dot menu on the right of the app)
  6. Select Repair
  7. Select Continue
  8. Select Continue again
    • This might take a few minutes to complete
  9. Open Microsoft Word and see if it is faster after updates are installed (it might require a system restart)
