Defining Key Terms

  • Desk Phone - The Cisco phone located at your ISU workstation. This phone uses the ISU phone system.
  • ISU Phone System - The telephone system that manages ISU desk phones and voice messaging.
  • ISU Number - Your official ISU work phone number assigned to your desk phone.
  • Remote Phone - A phone you use when you are away from your desk, such as a personal cell phone, home phone, or private office phone.
  • Off-Campus Phone - Any phone that is not connected to the ISU phone system.

Key Differences

Single Number Reach
  • Rings your Desk Phone and Remote Phone at the same time.
  • Calls remain within the ISU phone system.
  • Voicemail messages are stored in the ISU voice messaging system.
  • Allows you to answer calls remotely as if you were at your desk.
Call Forwarding
  • Transfers incoming calls from your ISU phone to another number.
  • Calls are routed outside the ISU phone system when forwarded to an off-campus phone.
  • Voicemail messages are stored on the Remote Phone’s voicemail system, if configured.
  • Some callers may see the forwarded (personal) phone number on their caller ID.
Privacy Consideration:
If keeping your personal phone number private is important, carefully consider whether Call Forwarding is the best option.
Phone Number Display
Many users have questions about what phone number appears on the caller ID when using these features. The scenarios below explain common situations.
Single Number Reach
  • ISU number calls another ISU number

  • Off-Campus Phone calls an ISU phone with Single Number Reach
The ISU number displays on the off-campus phone. The call remains in the ISU system.
  • Remote Phone (using Single Number Reach) calls an ISU phone

Call Forwarding

The caller sees the Remote Phone number. The call is forwarded outside the ISU system.
