Internet Speed Test

Summary

This article explains how to test internet speeds on and off campus using NetCom and Ookla tools, what speed ranges to expect for wired and wireless connections, and common factors that can affect network performance.

Body

Description

This article describes internet speed-testing services available to help users measure network performance on and off campus. These tools are provided by Networking and Communications (NetCom) and Ookla. Speed test results can help determine whether your connection is performing within expected ranges.

Details

Off-Campus Internet Speed Test (Ookla)

Ookla measures Internet speed to servers located off campus.
  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the test.

On-Campus Network Speed Test (NetCom)

The NetCom speed test measures network speed within the ISU campus network.
  1. Open a web browser while connected to the campus network.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the test.

Understanding Your Results

Speed test results can vary based on your connection type and how you are connected to the network.
  • Expected Results
    • Wired Network Connections
      • Typical speeds range from 100 Mbps to 950 Mbps
    • Wireless Network Connections
      • Typical speeds range from 6 Mbps to 120 Mbps

Factors That Affect Wireless Speed

  • Wireless performance can be influenced by many factors, including:
    • Distance from and location of the wireless Access Point (AP)
    • Number of devices connected to the network
    • Interference from other electronic devices
    • Physical obstacles such as walls or furniture
    • Older wireless adapters or outdated hardware
    • Applications using bandwidth (updates, streaming, cloud services)
    • Outdated or missing device drivers
    • VPN use, including encryption, decryption, or tunneling
