Turnitin Assignments Marked as Late in ISU Canvas for Faculty

Issue

Turnitin assignments will sporadically be marked as late  in the Canvas Gradebook even though submissions were made on time.
  • Symptoms: The Canvas Gradebook shows that the assignment was turned in late, even if it was turned in on time or early.
  • Possible Causes: This is a known issue between Canvas and Turnitin.

Cause

The due date of the Turnitin assignment changes to the date and time when instructor grades the first submission. This marks submissions as late in the Canvas Gradebook even if they were turned in on time or early. The Turnitin assignment will still show the correct due date and time, and correct time of student submissions.

Resolution

You can ignore the late status if you do not have a late submission policy enabled, as it will not affect student grades. However, students will see their submission marked as Late in the Gradebook. You can fix this by following the instructions below:

Change the late submission status to ‘None’ for each submission.

  1. Select Grades in the left toolbar to open the Gradebook.
  2. Select the red cell that shows late status for a submission, and select the arrow that appears next to the score to bring up the status screen.
  3. Under Status, select ‘None‘ and close the screen.
  4. The cell color will change to white, removing the late status.
