Description
If you use images in your quiz questions, it is recommended that you preview each of the questions before making the quiz available for students.
Instructions
To add an image file within a quiz question:
- Place your cursor in the question location where you would like to have the file appear.
- To upload a file from your computer:
- Click Insert from the menu, place your cursor over image so that it turns orange and then select Upload Image. Alternatively, you can select the Images icon and from the drop-down select Upload Image.
- The Upload Image box will open and you can drag and drop the image into the box or click to browse for the image on your computer. Add Alt Text that will not give away the answer to the question (see Best practices for naming image files...below). Click Submit to add the image to the question.
- To select a file from your course file repository:
- Click Insert from the menu or from the Images icon and select Course Files.
- A window with the images stored in your course will open on the right side. Click on an image to select it and it will automatically be inserted into the question.
- Select Update Question to save the changes.
Preview your quiz after you have added images to ensure that the images are displaying correctly.
- Quiz Preview in New Quizzes allows you to preview and test quiz questions and settings from a student's perspective. While previewing a quiz, you can also submit the quiz and view the student results page.
- To preview a Classic Quiz before it is published, select the quiz and click the Preview button. To view the quiz from a student's perspective, you can utilize the View as Student function but you must first publish the quiz. If you use the View as Student function, you can open SpeedGrader for that quiz, and select "Test Student" from the list of students.
What if I imported my quizzes from Moodle ISU and the images aren't showing?
If you imported your quizzes from Moodle ISU, you may need to download the original image file from your Moodle ISU course. To download a file, right click on the image and select Save image as....and save to a location on your computer. Do not use copy/paste.
Can I edit the images from within a question?
If you would like the ability to edit images within a question, you can use the Embed with Cidi Labs tool.
- Place your cursor in the question location where you would like to have the file appear.
- Click on Tools in the menu and select Apps. Alternatively, you can click on the Apps icon (looks like an electric plug).
- From the Apps menu, select Cidi Labs Upload/Embed Image. Note: If you are not seeing that app, click on View All, select Cidi Labs Upload/Embed Image and then Done. You may be asked to authorize its use if you have not previously used the application.
- From the Cidi Labs Upload/Embed Image window, select the location of the file:
- Selecting Computer will allow you to upload a file from your computer.
- Selecting Canvas will allow you to search for a file that you previously uploaded from within a Canvas course.
- Selecting Upsplash.com or Pexels.com will allow you to upload free, high quality images that have Creative Commons licenses.
- Selecting Public URL allows you to access an image stored on an external server.
- Once you have selected the file, you will be able to use the editing tools to modify the image, edit the file name, add Alt text, overwrite the original image if pulled from Canvas files, and choose where you would like to store the image in your existing folders.
- When you are ready to save and add your image, click the Embed and Upload button.

Best practices for naming image files...
- Be descriptive for you: Use clear, descriptive names like Bio101_Mitosis_Diagram.jpg for easy searching in your files.
- Be discrete for students: Within a question, use neutral names like Cell_Structure_Question_4.png to avoid giving away an answer should the student right click on the image.
