Bookmark Backups

Description

This article provides instructions on how to backup bookmarks in Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Safari at Idaho State University (ISU).

Backing Up Bookmarks with Google Chrome 

Export

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Select the three dots icon
  3. Hover over Bookmarks
  4. Select Bookmark Manager
  5. Select the three dots icon 
  6. Select Export bookmarks
  7. Select Location
  8. Select Save

Import

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Select the three dots icon
  3. Hover over Bookmarks
  4. Select Bookmark Manager button
  5. Select  the three dots icon
  6. Select the Import bookmarks button
  7. Locate your Backup File in the File Manager
  8. Select the Backup file

Backing Up Bookmarks with Mozilla Firefox 

Export

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Select the three lines icon
  3. Select the Bookmarks button
  4. Select Manage bookmarks or CTRL+Shift+O
  5. Select the Import and Backup button
  6. Select the Backup button
  7. Name and choose an appropriate location to save the backup file in the File Manager
  8. Select the Save button
Import
  1. Open Firefox
  2. Select the three lines icon
  3. Select the Bookmarks button
  4. Select Manage bookmarks or CTRL+Shift+O
  5. Select the Import and Backup button
  6. Select Restore
    • You will be able to choose from a list of existing backups if there are any recent or if they are of the desired time period
  7. Select Choose file...
  8. Highlight the appropriate JSON file from the save location
  9. Select the Open button

 

Backing Up Bookmarks with Microsoft Edge 

Export

  1. Open Edge
  2. Select the three dots icon
  3. Select Favorites
  4. Select the new three dots icon
  5. Select the Export Favorites button
  6. Name the file and choose an appropriate location to save it in your file manager
  7. Select the Save button

Import

  1. Open Edge
  2. Select the three dots icon
  3. Select Favorites
  4. Select the new three dots icon
  5. Select Import Favorites
  6. Choose what to import
  7. In the drop-down menu under Import From, select Favorites or Bookmarks HTML File 
  8. Select Choose File
  9. Find your saved Bookmarks HTML file and open it

Backing Up Bookmarks with Opera

  1. Export

    1. Open Opera
    2. Visit opera://bookmarks
    3. Using the drop-down menu, export your bookmarks
    Import
    1. Open Opera
    2. Visit opera://bookmarks
    3. Using the drop-down menu, import your bookmarks

Backing Up Bookmarks with Safari (MacOS)

Export

  1. Open Safari
  2. Select File from the menu bar
  3. Select Export Bookmarks
  4. Choose a location to save the file
  5. Select Save 
Import
  1. Open Safari
  2. Select File from the menu bar
  3. Select Import Form
  4. Find your saved Bookmarks HTML file and open it
  5. Select  Import
