Find Your MAC or IP Address (Windows and macOS)

Description

This article provides instructions on how to find the Media Access Control (MAC) and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of your Windows or macOS computer at Idaho State University (ISU). 

Note: You will need your MAC address when registering your device to DeviceNet.

Tips Before You Begin

  • The MAC address is different from an IP address.
  • The MAC address contains six pairs of numbers 0 - 9 and letters A - F.
    • Example: 00-1A-2B-3C-4D-5E
  • The IP address three sets of numbers, which can each be between 0 - 255.
    • Example: 192.168.0.1

Find Your MAC and IP addresses in Windows

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt in the search box and open the Command Prompt app.
  3. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
  4. Find the Physical Address to locate your MAC address, or the IPv4 Address for the IP address.

Find Your MAC and IP addresses in macOS

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings 
    • Note: If you are using an older version of macOS, select System Preferences. 
  3. Select Network.
  4. Select Ethernet network.
  5. Select Details.
    • Note: If you are using an older version of macOS, select Advanced.
  6. ​​​Find the Physical Address in the Hardware tab to locate your MAC address, or the IPv4 Address in the TCP/IP tab for the IP address.
