Windows 11 Upgrade Self Help Guide

Tags Windows11

Introduction

Windows 11 is the latest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system. It comes with enhanced security features and a refreshed look. While Windows 11 is the newest iteration of Windows 10, it remains familiar to Windows 10, which makes the transition relatively easy. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates and will not be allowed to connect to the ISU network.
  • Note: The Windows 11 upgrade will run similarly to regular Windows updates but will take longer (approximately 30-60 minutes).
    • Once the update runs, you must restart your computer when prompted.
We don't want you to feel overwhelmed. Moving to Windows 11 will be a much smoother transition than upgrading from Windows 7. The new features are mainly cosmetic, so you'll still find your favorite settings and features in familiar places. Plus, they'll be even easier to locate with a simple search on your system. Follow the steps below to see if your system is eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11. This self-help upgrade campaign is designed to identify if your computer meets the system requirements for Windows 11. It will give you time to budget for any necessary upgrades in the coming year if it doesn't. Thanks for considering and cooperating with this self-help upgrade effort.
  • Note: If you are due for a computer upgrade before the end of next year, please wait. Your new computer will get Windows 11 during initial setup.

You don't have to do this alone, and it's okay not to upgrade immediately. The IT Service Desk can assist you and provide any support you need. Please don't hesitate to email your questions to help@isu.edu.

It is crucial to check your eligibility for an upgrade. Please review the Pre-Upgrade Checklist below and collaborate with your department to allocate a budget for a new computer if necessary.
  1. Ensure your data is protected by backing it up in Box.
    • Note: Windows 11 upgrades have really good track records of leaving things as they are when you click Keep apps and programs (this is selected by default in later sections). However, you are still liable for data lost in a worst-case scenario. Lost data after an upgrade is almost impossible to recover.
  2. Ensure the applications and software you use every day are compatible with Windows 11
