ProctorFree provides recorded proctoring for online exams.

Which browser should I use?

ProctorFree's Desktop Application is compatible with all major browsers; Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer 11+, and Edge. ProctorFree may require that the latest updates have been installed for your browser.

What if I have technical difficulties while taking an exam?

When completing a session with ProctorFree, users whose computers don't meet our minimum requirements or experience technical issues (internet connectivity, too many background applications, etc.) may find that ProctorFree will automatically abort during their session. If this occurs please contact the ProctorFree support team immediately through their Live Chat located in the bottom right-hand corner of all ProctorFree web pages, or call at (855) 759-6569. The ProctorFree team will assist you with documenting the issue, informing your professor, and relaunching ProctorFree. We strongly advise that you make your professor aware immediately as well.

When contacting ProctorFree regarding a camera crash or software abort during your session, the ProctorFree team will request the information below to ensure we thoroughly document and inform all parties adequately:

What should I do if my computer does not meet the computer requirements?

If your computer fails the Computer System Requirements for the Online Proctoring solution, you may need to make arrangements with your instructor/department. For example: have the instructor proctor the student in a face to face or Zoom setting or have a vacant office with a “Proctor Ready” computer that the student can use.
Using a standard computer lab on campus will not be a viable option with most Online Proctoring platforms.
Students must take the exam on a desktop computer or laptop (not a tablet or cell phone).

Can ProctorFree do offline paper exams?

No, ProctorFree is only recommended for online exams in ISU Canvas.

Can ProctorFree do exams on third-party websites outside of Moodle?

No, ProctorFree is only recommended for online exams in ISU Canvas.

How can I set up a practice exam using ProctorFree to ensure students and I (the instructor) have no technical difficulties?

When ProctorFree is added to a course in ISU Canvas, a practice quiz is added as well. Log into the Faculty control panel and in the list of quizzes find the “Practice Quiz using ProctorFree.” Underneath the proctoring options drop-down menu select “Practice (No Fee/ No Auditing). Using the practice quiz well before a high-stakes exam or quiz will help alleviate unforeseen technical difficulties at the time of an exam or quiz.

What do I do (as an instructor) if I have technical difficulties?

When experiencing a technical difficulty please send the following information to itrc@isu.edu and Harrison Turley at success@proctorfree.com (the Proctorfree account manager).

This allows the ITRC to check the ISU Canvas quiz settings and ProctorFree support to check their settings and come to a quick resolution.

How long does it take to get the report back?

ProctorFree’s standard processing time is 24 hours or less; however, during peak times the processing time may increase to 72 hours during periods of high test volume (Midterms / Finals).

How long will the report be available?

Currently, sessions are stored indefinitely. Reports do not expire or remove sessions from our system, unless by specific individual requests. (GDPR compliance, etc.)

What supports are available within ProctorFree for students who require accommodations?

There is currently no accommodation entry within ProctorFree. Students will take the exam as normal and any actions that the student takes as part of their accommodation would also be considered cheating in a normal testing environment so ProctorFree will include the behavior in the anomaly report. However, as the instructor reviews the anomaly report; they can ignore these flagged anomalies.

How can faculty arrange for accommodations offered by ProctorFree?

Proctorfree is considered a passive proctoring solution. It will adhere to the following specific user overrides that the instructor sets in ISU Canvas.

Practice quizzes in ProctorFree are limited to 20 minutes; with a 5 minute warning before the ProctorFree session automatically ends at the 20 minute mark. Practice Quizzes should only be used in low-stakes environments so that students can get familiar with the ProctorFree solution.

Full Proctoring and Record Only quizzes in ProctorFree are limited to 3.5 hours and the session will automatically end, with a warning a few minutes before to allow for users to submit.

The Canvas Quiz override does not change the limit of ProctorFree sessions. For these instances where exams will be longer than ProctorFree’s time limit including instances with time and half accommodation, it is recommended splitting a quiz into multiple quiz activities to allow users a break in between and to allow ProctorFree to capture both quizzes.

The Canvas Quiz override will continue to work if the accommodation time limit is shorter than 3.5 hours.

Can faculty change the scheduling window for one or more selected students?

No, ProctorFree is limited in how it adheres to Moodle quiz user overrides.

In scenarios where this is the only proctoring option available, Instructors can allow students to use ProctorFree outside of the default open/close dates with this work around. The instructor may need to widen the open/close dates and then use Moodle’s Restrict Access options to control users' access. The other option is to create a duplicate Quiz with different open/close dates and Moodle’s restrict-access options.

How does ProctorFree handle virtual machines? Can students take the exam with ProctorFree and look up answers without being detected?

ProctorFree does not detect the use of Virtual Machines; actions completed at the desktop level are recorded and provided for review. To ensure users' privacy we do not perform any system level verification or tracking of other applications or systems running in the same environment.

How does ProctorFree handle privacy concerns and give the instructor and students peace of mind? For example, how does ProctorFree protect sensitive information when students verify ID?

ProctorFree strives to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse or alteration by using physical, electronic or procedural security measures appropriate to the sensitivity of the information in our control. Although guaranteed security does not exist on the Internet or offline, we make commercially reasonable efforts to handle such information consistent with this Privacy Policy and applicable laws.

How does ProctorFree identify that someone started a session with ProctorFree, gained access to the exam, stopped/finished ProctorFree, and finished the Moodle ISU exam without being monitored?

ProctorFree does not identify or verify exams completed by individuals. ProctorFree's services provide an analysis of session recordings, these may or may not include (or be limited to) an exam being completed.
