Description
This article provides instructions on adding testing accommodations such as additional time and/or attempts for students with a qualifying disability in New Quizzes in ISU Canvas. Note: A new quiz is indicated by a solid rocket icon.
Instructions
- From within your course, in Course Navigation, click on the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignments page.
- To add student accommodations, locate any existing New Quiz. Then click the Options icon (3 dots) and click the Build link.
- Click on the Moderate tab.
- Click on the student name link of the student you wish to enable an accommodation for. Alternatively, you can use the Search field to find a specific student. Note: Only one accommodation can be set per student.
- Accommodations options are as follows:
- Additional Attempts: In the Additional Attempts menu, select the number of additional attempts you wish to allow a student.
- Time Adjustments - granting additional test time, removing the time limit, and adding time using a time multiplier. Note: The "Until" date and time setting for a quiz always overrides any time-based accommodations. Therefore, instructors may need to adjust the "Until" date and time in order to create a large enough timing window to allow for the accommodation.
- To add a time multiplier, select the Time limit multiplier option in the time adjustments menu. Then enter the multiplier in the Time limit multiplier field.
- Alternatively, you may select the Give additional time option in the time adjustments menu. Then use the Hours and Minutes fields to add additional time.
- To remove the time limit, select the Remove time limit (unlimited) option in the time adjustment menu.
- Reduce answer choices: Click the Reduced Answer Choices toggle. This removes one incorrect answer from all multiple-choice questions with four or more options. To apply the changes, click the Save button. You can also click the Edit icon next to the student's name and then click the Reduced Answer Choices toggle on. To apply the changes, click the Apply button.
- Click the Save button to save all setting changes. Once you have saved the settings, you will be able to view the student's accommodations in the Accommodations column.
Important Note: Accommodations added to New Quizzes apply to all quizzes in a course for a student. However, the instructor will not see the accommodation added to the other quizzes until the student has accessed the quiz that the accommodation was initially added to.
It may be helpful to remind the student with an additional time accommodation to start the quiz early enough to allow for the extended time so that they are not cut off when the "Until" date and time is reached. For example, if an accommodation allows a student to receive 1.5x time on an hour-long quiz that closes at 7:00pm, that student needs to begin the quiz no later than 5:30pm in order to receive their full additional time accommodation.
