Viewing a Multipart assignment

Multipart assignments appear in your assignment list as separate parts. When you open the submission list for a part, a badge shows which part you are viewing and the total number of parts in the Multipart assignment. Note: A banner appears if you have not opened every part of the Multipart assignment in ISU Canvas. Open each remaining part to ensure students can see all parts in the Multipart Overview. The banner no longer appears after you have opened every part.

To open a Multipart Assignment:

  1. Go to your Assignment list.
  2. Find the part of the Multipart assignment you want to review.
  3. Select the assignment title. The assignment opens to the submission list for the selected part. Each part of a Multipart assignment has its own submission list. The submission list shows student submissions and available report indicators for that part.

For more information see the article, Viewing a Multipart assignment (external link).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the purpose of a Multipart assignment?

  • A: Mulitpart assignments let instructors connect two or more assignment parts into one larger assignment workflow.

Q: What are the benefits of using a Multipart assignment?

  • A: When students need to complete a larger project in stages, such as an outline, annotated bibliography, first draft, and final draft, Multipart assignments can help students manage complex work in smaller steps. They also give instructors more opportunities to review progress, provide feedback, and see how a student's work develops across each part.

Q: What is a Multipart assignment?

  • A: It's a connected set of assigned parts. Each part has its own title, instructions, dates, settings, and submissions, but the parts are grouped together as one assignment experience. Students complete each part as they work toward the larger assignment. Instructors can review each submission and provide feedback at different stages.

Q: When should I use Multipart assignments?

Q: How do students see when a Multipart assignment is used?

  • A: Students see each part of a Multipart assignment as a separate assignment in ISU Canvas as they normally would. When they open a part, they can submit their work for that part. Students can also open the Multipart Overview to see all parts of the assignment and identify which parts are complete or upcoming. See the article, Learn more about completing a Multipart assignment (external link) for more details.

Q: Can Multipart assignments help with academic integrity?

  1. A: Yes. Multipart assignments can support academic integrity by giving instructors more visibility into how student work develops over time. Reviewing work across stages can help instructors identify changes in writing, progress, and engagement before the final submission.
