How to Claim and Set Up Your ISU Account

Welcome to the Idaho State University family!

Welcome to Idaho State University! Follow these steps to claim your ISU account, set up account recovery and multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Before You Begin

  • Approximately 10–15 minutes to complete account setup.
  • Access to the personal email address provided to ISU.
  • Your date of birth.
  • A mobile phone you personally own and can access.
  • Internet access.

Step 1 - Check Your Personal Email

  1. Check your personal email inbox. Look for a message from iam@isu.edu with instructions to claim your ISU account.
    • Note: This email is sent to the personal email address you provided to ISU.

Step 2 - Claim Your ISU Account

  1. Open the email from iam@isu.edu.
  2. Copy the Account Claim String included in the email.
  3. Select the claim link to open the Password and Account Management Portal.
  4. Enter the email address where you received the Account Claim Email.
  5. Paste the Account Claim String in the box. 
  6. Enter your date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format.
  7. Select the "I'm not a robot" checkbox.
  8. Select Submit.

Tip: Keep your personal email open while completing the process.

Step 3 - Accept the Idaho State University Acceptable Use Policy

  1. Read the Idaho State University Acceptable Use Policy displayed on the screen.
  2. Read the Information Technology Services policies available on the Idaho State University Policies website. Visit Information Technology Services Policies (external link) for more information.  
  3. Select the checkbox labeled "I have read the terms, and hereby agree to all of the conditions."
  4. Select Next to continue.

Step 4 - Set Up Security Questions

  1. Review the available security questions.
  2. For each required question, select a question from the Question drop-down menu.
  3. Enter your answer in the corresponding Answer field.
  4. Complete all required question-and-answer pairs.
  5. When finished, select Submit to save your recovery information and continue.

Note: Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*).

Step 5 - Enter or Confirm Recovery Information

To set up account recovery options, enter or verify at least one recovery method.
  1. Review the recovery information displayed on the page.
  2. Verify that your Account Claim Email is correct.
    • Note: If the email address has already been verified, the system will indicate that the email address is verified.
  3. Enter or confirm your Mobile Phone number if you would like to use it for account recovery.
  4. Select Next to continue to the next step.

Step 6 - Register Your Mobile Phone in Duo Mobile

Use these steps to register your mobile phone for Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Before You Begin

  • Ensure you have your mobile phone available.
  • Verify that your phone number is correct before submitting the form.
  • Duo Mobile should be installed on your device if prompted during setup.

Register Your Device

  1. On the Duo Device Registration page, select Mobile Phone from the Device Type drop-down menu.
  2. In the Device Name field, enter a name that helps you identify the device.
    • Examples: iPhone, Ziggys Phone or Work Phone
  3. Select your device's operating system from the Platform Type drop-down menu.
    • Example: iOS for iPhones or Android for Android phones
  4. Select the appropriate Country Code.
    • The default is +1 (United States).
  5. Enter a mobile phone number that belongs to you and that you can access when signing in to ISU systems. Do not use a parent’s, guardian’s, friend's, or shared phone number, as you will need access to this device to complete multi-factor authentication and recover your account.
  6. Select the checkbox labeled:
    • I confirm that the provided phone number is accurate.
  7. Select Submit.

 

Step 7 - Secure Your Account With a Password

Use these steps to create or reset your Idaho State University password.

Before You Begin

  • Create a password that meets all displayed password requirements.
  • Choose a password that is unique and not used for other personal accounts.
  • Do not share your password with anyone.
  • Password requirements and strength indicators will update as you type.

Create Your Password

  1. Verify that your Username is displayed correctly.
  2. Select the Password field.
  3. Enter your new password.
    • As you type, the system will display password requirements and update the password strength indicator.
    • Continue modifying your password until all requirements are met.
  4. (Optional) Select the Show Password button (eye icon) to view the password you entered.
  5. Enter the same password in the Confirm Password field.
  6. (Optional) Select the Show Password button (eye icon) next to the Confirm Password field to verify the passwords match.
  7. Review the Password Strength indicator and ensure all password requirements are met before continuing.
    • Note: A stronger password provides better protection for your account.
  8. Select Reset Password to save your new password.
  9. Wait for the system to verify and save your new password.
  10. Select Summary to continue to the next step.

tip: Use a password manager to create and store secure passwords.

Success - Your Identity Claim Is Complete

Your ISU account is now set up and ready to use.

Additional Options

  • Setup Later

    • Select Setup Later if you want to postpone device registration and complete it later.
  • Clear

    • Select Clear to remove all entered information and start over.
  • Setup Password

    • Select Setup Password to configure a password authentication method if available.

Troubleshooting

  • I receive an error when submitting the form.

    • Verify that all required fields marked with an asterisk (*) are completed.
    • Confirm that your phone number is entered in the correct format.
    • Ensure the confirmation checkbox is selected.
  • My country code is incorrect.

    • Select the Country Code drop-down menu and choose the appropriate country before entering your phone number.
  • I selected the wrong platform type.

    • Return to the Platform Type drop-down menu and select the correct operating system before submitting.
  • I did not receive the account claim email.

    • Check your Spam or Junk folder.
    • Verify that you are checking the personal email address you provided to ISU.
    • If you still cannot find the email, contact the IT Service Desk.
