Google notifications from apps that are no longer available

Issue / Question
Notifications are occuring on Android phones after logging into ISU email accounts that no longer have access to Google Drive, Sheets, Docs and Slides.

Environment
  • Platform
    • Android
  • Audience Affected
    • Alumni
    • Retirees (in May 2024)
Cause
Android operating systems have built in programming that syncs any Google account with the apps they expect it will offer. Since ISU account for alumni and retirees will not have access to Google Drive, Sheets, Docs and Slides, Google Play Services tries to repeatedly sync/log into these apps with out success, resulting in multiple notifcations on the client's device.
Resolution
Google Support recommends the following steps:

To start:
  1. Remove your ISU account from your phone (Add or remove an account on Android)
  2. Clear cache of Google Play Services and whatever other app is sending the notifications, i.e., Sheets, Docs, etc. (How to clear cache from Google apps)
  3. Add your ISU account back on your phone if you still want to use Gmail to access your ISU email.

If the notifications continue:

  1. Remove your ISU account from your phone
  2. Uninstall Drive, Sheets, Docs or whatever app is sending the notifications (other accounts or data associated on the phone will not be affected by this).
  3. Reinstall Drive, Sheets, Docs, etc.
  4. Add your ISU account back on your phone.

If you are still experiencing notifications after following these steps, please reach out to Google Support or work with your service provider. ISU will be unable to turn these services back on for you on our enterprise account.
