Using the Video Management System in Panopto with ISU Canvas

Description

This article provides instructions on how to use the video management system in Panopto for ISU Canvas at Idaho State University (ISU).

Panopto is a video management system for capturing, storing, and sharing educational content. It allows faculty to record lectures, presentations, and training sessions on any device, with options for live streaming and on-demand playback. Features include video organization, search, and analytics, making it a powerful tool for teaching and learning.

With the Panopto LTI, videos can be embedded anywhere in ISU Canvas and played back on-demand on any computer, laptop, or mobile device. The Panopto activity enables an instructor to upload, record or choose videos in the Panopto video management system, and then embed those videos into a course.

Storing Videos in Panopto

  • Panopto should be restricted to user-created videos that will be used more than one semester such as lectures, training materials, or instructional videos.
  • The following situations are not appropriate use of Panopto video storage:
    • Zoom recordings that will only be used one semester. Please use the Zoom Cloud Recordings option (external link) in your course instead. Review Viewing Zoom cloud recording analytics in LTI Pro (external link). (LTI Pro is also referred to as the Zoom Activity in the LMS).
    • YouTube videos created by others.
    • Videos created by others that will violate copyright (e.g. textbook publishers, other universities, etc.). "Fair Use" does not mean you can download / upload videos without permission from the publisher.
