Description
Panopto is a video management system for capturing, storing, and sharing educational content. It allows faculty to record lectures, presentations, and training sessions on any device, with options for live streaming and on-demand playback. Features include video organization, search, and analytics, making it a powerful tool for teaching and learning.
With the Panopto LTI, videos can be embedded anywhere in ISU Canvas and played back on-demand on any computer, laptop, or mobile device. The Panopto activity enables an instructor to upload, record or choose videos in the Panopto video management system, and then embed those videos into a course.
There are three options for linking Panopto videos into a course:
- Embedding via the Panopto LTI External Tool
- Embedding within the text editor
- Enabling Panopto to show on the left-hand navigation
Note: Use of Panopto should be restricted to user-created videos that will be used more than one semester, such as lectures, training materials, or instructional videos.
Embedding via the Panopto LTI External Tool
This method creates a direct link to a specific video within a module.
- Navigate to the module where you would like to embed a video and Select the + button to add an item to the module
- Open the drop-down menu and select External Tool
- Scroll through the list and select Panopto LTI
- A pop-up window will appear with the options to Choose an existing video, Upload a video, or Record
- Select Upload
- Drag the file(s) into the box or select to find the file(s) on your computer
- Once the file has uploaded, select Insert and then Add Item.
- Note: The video will need to process before it is available for viewing. The processing happens in the background so it is okay to navigate away from the Panopto LTI.
Embedding within the text editor
This method embeds videos into Canvas course materials anywhere you have access to the text editor such as Pages, Announcements, Assignments, or Discussions. When videos are embedded, they can be played from within the item a user is viewing without opening the video in a new tab or openning the full Panopto Videos tool. For instructions, see How to Embed Panopto Videos in a Canvas Course.
Enabling Panopto to show on the left-hand navigation
- If the Panopto video tool is not in your left-hand navigation, it may not have been enabled for your course. To enable it, select Settings from the left-hand navigation.
- Select the Navigation tab. If Panopto appears in the bottom section, click the 3 dots and select Enable.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Navigation window and select Save.
Note: In Panopto, all videos are organized into course folders. When the Panopto course tool is enabled, users are taken directly to the folder that is automatically set up to store the videos for the course. All of the videos within that folder are shared with everyone enrolled in the course. However, only instructors have access to create, modify, and share videos. Students only have access to search for and view videos that are within the course folder. See How to Use Panopto with Canvas for Instructors, steps 1 and 2 for more information.
How do I record a video in Panopto?
- Use Capture (Browser) which records directly in your browser using your webcam and microphone. For more information about using the Panopto Capture (Browser) tool, please see How to Record A Video in Panopto Using the Panopto Capture Browser Tool.
- Panopto for Windows / Mac (App) requires you to first download the Panopto App to your computer. For more information about using the Panopto for Windows / Mac (App) please see How to Record in Panopto Using the Panopto App.
- Note: The audio quality of a video recording using Panopto Capture will depend on your browser configuration. Aspects like the number of tabs open, number of extensions installed, and the amount of RAM in your computer can lead to lower-quality video and audio recordings.
Can I use a video in multiple courses?
- Yes. You can embed a video from any of your Panopto folders, and when students select on it they will be able to watch it (even if it is stored in a Panopto folder from a different course/semester).
- Follow the instructions for adding a video using the Panopto LTI but instead of uploading a video, you will want to choose an existing recording, browse or search through your available Panopto folders.
- Select the video to embed. Next select Insert and then Add Item..
