Adding Accommodations to Classic Quizzes

  1. From within your course, in Course Navigation, click on the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignments page.
  2. To add a student accommodation, click on the quiz, then click Moderate This Quiz.
  3. Next to the name of the student you wish to add an accommodation for, click the Change user extensions (pencil) icon. Alternatively, you can use the Search field to find a specific student.
  4. If allowing extra Attempts, type the number of additional attempts in the Extra attempts box.
  5. If allowing extra time on every attempt, type the number of additional minutes in the Extra time on every attempt box. Note: The "Until" date and time setting for a quiz always overrides any time-based accommodations. Therefore, instructors may need to adjust the "Until" date and time in order to create a large enough timing window to allow for the accommodation.
  6. Click on Save.

Note: In Classic Quizzes, you will have to apply the accommodations to each quiz individually.

It may be helpful to remind the student with an additional time accommodation to start the quiz early enough to allow for the extended time so that they are not cut off when the "Until" date and time is reached.  For example, if an accommodation allows a student to receive 1.5x time on an hour-long quiz that closes at 7:00pm, that student needs to begin the quiz no later than 5:30pm in order to receive their full additional time accommodation.

Using SpeedGrader in Classic Quizzes

If a quiz was created using the Classic Quizzes tool, instructors can choose to manually grade the same quiz question for each student before viewing student submissions for a different quiz question. Essay and file upload questions always require manual grading, but any quiz question type may be manually graded in SpeedGrader. To use SpeedGrader follow these steps:

  1. From within your course, in Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
  2. Click the name of the quiz you want to open.
  3. In the Sidebar, click the SpeedGrader link.
  4. To enable question grading, click the SpeedGrader settings icon and select Options from the drop-down menu.
  5. Select the Grade by question checkbox.
  6. To view a question, click the question number in the number bar. If a question needs to be manually graded, you can click the question number directly within the notification window. Note: When hovering over any box in the number bar, the box will temporarily fill with a light gray color to indicate which quiz number you want to select.
  7. Once you begin to view the quiz, a blue outline around the number will identify the question you are currently viewing. A blue outline will also appear around the entire question.
  8. To assign a grade for a question or to revise the grade for an automatically graded question, enter the score in the points field, then click the Update Scores button. Note: You may also enter fudge points to adjust a student's score for an entire quiz.
  9. To grade a student submission for the same question, click the arrow in the student menu or click the drop-down menu and select a student from the student list. SpeedGrader will show the same quiz question for the next student.

Regrading a Classic Quiz

As a result of quiz analytics or student feedback, you may need to use quiz regrade to edit existing quiz questions and tell Canvas to recalculate student grades. Quiz regrade only works with specific question types and only applies to students who have already taken the quiz. Classic quiz regrade is available for Multiple Choice, True/False, and Multiple Answers question types. To regrade a Classic Quiz:

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
  2. Find the quiz you want to regrade and click the Options icon, then click the Edit button.
  3. Click the Questions tab.
  4. Locate the question you want to regrade and hover over the question until the edit icon appears. Click the Edit icon.
  5. Hover over the answer you want to select as the new correct answer until a green arrow appears. Click the green arrow to select the new answer as the correct answer.
  6. Canvas recognizes you have changed the correct answer for the question. In the Regrade Options dialog box, select one of the following regrade options by clicking the radio button next to the option you want to apply to the quiz.
    1. Award points for both corrected and previously correct answers (no scores will be reduced). This option will avoid penalizing students who chose the incorrect answer during the quiz. Note: This option is not available for Multiple Answer questions.
    2. Only award points for the correct answer (some students' scores may be reduced). This option allows you to correct the answer and give credit to those who selected the answer that should have been correct.
    3. Give everyone full credit. This option gives everyone who has taken the quiz, full credit for the question regardless of what answer they chose.
    4. Update question without regrading. If you need to improve your question or answers for a future quiz, you can select this option to update a question without regrading the students who have already taken the quiz. Note: Quiz attempts made after updating the question will receive the updated question/answer.
    5. Click the Update Question button.
    6. When you've finished editing your quiz, click the Save button. Note: Regrade options will not apply until you have re-saved the quiz. If you exit the quiz without saving, Canvas asks you to save your changes when you return to the quiz. To update your changes, click the Save It Now button.

Note: When students view their quiz results, they see a notification if their quiz has been affected. The attempt history also reflects the regraded score.

Regrade Restrictions

Quiz regrade does not apply to questions linked to a question bank since questions may be used in more than one quiz (for example a chapter quiz and a midterm). Additionally, adding or deleting answers from a question without submissions disables the option to regrade that question.

If a question has been regraded multiple times, the Award points for both corrected and previously correct answers option only awards points for the correct answer and the latest answer marked as correct.
