Questions and Answers about ISU Canvas Course Set-Up

Q: How do I add other people to my course?

  • A: Students are automatically enrolled in your ISU Canvas course through Banner. If you want to add a co-instructor, TA, or staff member, complete the Canvas Academic Courses: Add Users / Change Role Request Form (external link) and the Instructional Technology Resource Center (ITRC) will get that taken care of for you. You will receive an email confirmation when the task has been completed.

Q: What is a "metacourse" and how do I request one?

  • A: An ISU Canvas metacourse is a single course shell that merges enrollments from multiple sections into one shared space. With a metacourse, you can manage content, assignments, and communication for all sections at once—no more duplicating work across multiple shells. Complete the Canvas: Metacourse Request Form (external link) to request one. Important: While some Canvas guides reference “cross-listed courses,” ISU does not use Canvas’s cross-listing feature. Metacourses are the recommended solution.

Q: Can I have a non-academic course in ISU Canvas?

  • A: You can request a “Special Course” in Canvas by filling out the  Canvas: Special Course Request Form (external link). These are perfect for ISU training, workshops, committees, or other non-credit activities. Heads up: All users must have an active ISU account to be added and/or have access to an ISU Canvas course (i.e. it does not work the same as ISU Moodle Community).
