Using Genio for Audio-Based Note Taking

This article provides instructions on how to install and use the Genio app for recording lectures, creating audio transcripts and taking notes at Idaho State University (ISU).

Genio Features

Genio provides simple learning tools that help students boost knowledge, skills and confidence. Genio was created to help learners overcome challenges by creating an environment in which they are equipped, empowered, and encouraged to succeed from day one. Users can do the following with Genio:

  • Capture everything from class with audio recording (both in person, online, and in Zoom)
  • Access live captions and transcripts from audio-based content
  • Take handwritten notes with Scribble, add images, and import slides
  • Generate study notes
  • Navigate class content more easily with AI Outline
  • STEM study support tools
  • Organize notes with labels and tasks
  • Refine knowledge with AI-powered Quiz Me and Transcription
  • Record themselves presenting and review as often as need to build confidence
  • Download free guides and tools to help study smarter
  • Use offline but access notes on any device through the Cloud

Accessing Genio

Genio is free to ISU students when access is requested through ISU's Disability Services Center. Students can email a request for access to Disability Services.

Steps to using Genio:

  1. After you have requested access through ISU Disability Services, check your email for a message from Genio. The message will allow you to create a free Genio account.
  2. Once you have created your account, select the Start using Genio button.

Using Genio

  1. Once you have accessed Genio, you can select the + New Event button near the top left of the menu.
  2. To record audio during lectures, select the red record button at the top left. The recording can be paused or stopped at any time.
  3. After recording, select the transcript button near the right side of the screen (between audio and outline) and select the transcribe audio button.
    1. After a brief wait, you will see an audio transcript of the recorded lecture.
    2. Note: The transcript will not always be perfect word-for-word, but it's a useful starting point.
  4. Upload slides or PowerPoints using the Import slides button and scroll through the slides using the arrows beneath them.
  5. Take notes using the text box at the bottom of the screen
    1. Add headings, mark things as important, and mark items for later review
    2. Insert images into notes using the post image button, or insert drawings using the post scribble button
    3. Insert definitions and tasks into your notes (both found on the note functions bar above the text box)
  6. Organize recordings and transcripts into collections 
  7. Toggle between light and dark mode using the sun/moon icon at the top right of the screen
