Description
This article provides instructions on how to use discussion checkpoints in ISU Canvas at Idaho State University (ISU).
Discussion Checkpoints enable the assignment of separate dates and points possible for initial replies to the topic and required replies to others. In addition, instructors can establish the points possible for replying to the topic, the number of additional replies required, and the points possible for additional replies. This streamlines the grading process in Discussion SpeedGrader.
Using discussion checkpoints
- Edit the settings for the discussion and check the box for Assign graded checkpoints
- Under Checkpoint Settings, enter a number for Points Possible for Reply to Topic, the number of Additional Replies Required (between 1 and 10), and the Points Possible: Additional Replies
- Under Assignment Settings, set the Reply to Topic Due Date and Time, the Required Replies Due Date and Time and if desired, the Available From and Until Dates and Times
- Click Save.
To grade the discussion posts click on the discussion and from the 3 dot menu, select Open in SpeedGrader.
Note: Discussion Checkpoints cannot be set for discussions that have already received a reply.
Warning: [Insert critical safety information or deadline reminders here.]
Enabling discussion checkpoints overrides grading with a rubric. If a rubric has been added to a discussion, you can still use it to indicate the level of achievement but the points will not be added to the student's grade.
