Adding a User or Changing a User Role in a Course

The +People option in Canvas is not available at ISU as it doesn't work correctly with ISU's enrollment system. You can request to have an individual or group of individuals be added or to have the role of an individual changed within your ISU Canvas course by submitting one of the forms linked below. The information entered into the form will ensure that individuals are properly assigned the correct role and have the correct permissions to be in specific ISU Canvas courses.

Choosing the Role to be Assigned

There are four roles that can be assigned to users in a course and each one has a set of permissions.

  • Teacher - This role has full editing rights and is listed as a teacher in the course. (This role is designated in Banner, and is the Instructor of Record in MyISU.)
  • Unlisted Teacher - This role has full editing and grading permissions. (This role is used for co-teachers, GTAs, etc.)
  • Non-Editing Teacher - This role can teach the course, grade student submissions in activities and in the gradebook, but do not have permission to add, remove, or edit course materials.
  • Students:  Students can not be added to academic courses without registering for the course or auditing the course.  Students can only be added through official enrollments (or audits) performed by the Registrar's Office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I see extra people in my course who are not registered and/or I didn't request to be added?

  • A: Users with DS in front of their name have been assigned by Disability Services to assist students needing ADA accommodations such as video captioning, note taking, and/or ASL translation. These users have view-only access. The ITRC creates the user accounts and populates them into specific courses at the request of Disability Services. Students enrolled in the course do not see these participants listed in the People tab.

Q: What if I need to give access to a student with an Incomplete?

  • A: To request to have a student with an Incomplete added to a course, complete the Canvas: Students with Incomplete Form.
  • Students with an incomplete will be added back into the course they originally registered for to work on their Incomplete. This ensures that their work and grades stay in the same course they began in, and courses follow enrollments with the Registrar's office.
