Backing Up a Moodle ISU Course

Description

A backup file can be created from a previous semester, saved on your computer, and uploaded into your most recent course. Once uploaded, your backup file can be restored in your new course. Note: The ITRC is not responsible for storing and archiving course backup files.

Backing Up a Moodle ISU Course

  1. Access the Moodle ISU course you want to backup.
  2. In the upper-right corner of your screen, toggle editing on.
  3. On the course navigation, select the More option.
  4. In the More option, select Course reuse.
  5. Under the course course navigation is a menu to select your activity type - select Backup.
  6. On the Backup settings page, note the options that are automatically checked and edit as desired
  7. At the bottom of the page, choose one of the following options:
    1. Jump to final step: Automatically creates a backup file including everything in the course (continue to step 11)
    2. Next: Takes you to the next page to select the items you wish to include or exclude in the backup file (continue to step 8)
  8. On the next page, check or uncheck the boxes next to the items or weeks you may or may not wish to include in the backup file. Notes:
    1. You can check/uncheck the entire course by clicking All or None at the top of the page.
    2. In order to select an individual item within a module, select the module title first,
  9. Once you have selected the items you wish to include, at the bottom of the page, click Next.
  10. On the next page, you will see the backup file name, settings, and included items. The included items will be checkmarked and the items not included will have an "X" next to them.
  11. At the bottom of the page, click Perform backup. Note: This process may take a few minutes. Do not do anything with the computer until the progress bar reaches 100%.
  12. After you receive the message, "The backup process has completed", click Continue.

Downloading a Backup File

  1. In the upper-right corner of your Moodle ISU course, on the course navigation select the More option.
  2. In the More option, select Course reuse.
  3. From the course reuse menu, select Restore.
  4. In the Course backup area, the top file should be the most recent backup file created for the course.
  5. To the right of the filename, click Download.
  6. In the pop-up, select Save File.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Select an area on your computer or removable storage device to save the backup file.
  9. Click Save File.
