Description
Panopto is a video management system for capturing, storing, and sharing educational content. It allows faculty to record lectures, presentations, and training sessions on any device, with options for live streaming and on-demand playback. Features include video organization, search, and analytics, making it a powerful tool for teaching and learning.
With the Panopto LTI, videos can be embedded anywhere in ISU Canvas and played back on-demand on any computer, laptop, or mobile device. The Panopto activity enables an instructor to upload, record or choose videos in the Panopto video management system, and then embed those videos into a course.
Instructions
There are four options for linking Panopto videos into your course.
Option 1: Embedding a Panopto Video in a Canvas Page
This method embeds videos into Canvas course materials anywhere you have access to the text editor such as Pages, Announcements, Assignments, and/or Discussions. When videos are embedded, they can be played from within the item a user is viewing without opening the video in a new tab or opening the full Panopto Videos tool. To embed a video using the text editor:
-
Navigate to your course in Canvas.
- Click on the activity or resource that you wish to embed the video into (or create a new item).
- Select Edit.
- In the Rich Content Editor, select the Panopto icon (a green circle with a white triangle) in the toolbar.
- A Panopto window will open allowing you to choose an existing video, upload a video, or create a video.
- Once you have added the video, click on the Insert button to embed the video.
- Select Save or Save & Publish to finalize.
For additional information, see How to Embed Panopto Videos in a Canvas Course.
Option 2: Linking a Panopto Video in a Canvas Module
This method creates a direct link to a specific video within a module.
- Navigate to the module where you would like to embed a video and Select the + button to add an item to the module
- Open the drop-down menu and select External Tool
- Scroll through the list and select Panopto LTI
- A pop-up window will appear with the options to Choose an existing video, Upload a video, or Record
- Select Upload
- Drag the file(s) into the box or select to find the file(s) on your computer
- Once the file has uploaded, select Insert and then Add Item.
Note: The video will need to process before it is available for viewing. The processing happens in the background so it is okay to navigate away from the Panopto LTI.
Option 3: Share a Direct Link
- In Panopto, find your video and select Share.
- Copy the Video Link and adjust permissions if needed.
- Paste the link in a Canvas Page, Announcement, Discussion, or Assignment for easy access.
Note: Analytics will not be collected for videos that have been accessed via the link.
Option 4: Enabling Panopto in the Course Navigation
In Panopto, all videos are organized into course folders. When the Panopto course tool is enabled, all of the videos within that folder are shared with everyone enrolled in the course. However, only instructors have access to create, modify, and share videos. Students only have access to search for and view videos that are within the course folder. To add the Panopto tool to Course Navigation:
- Select Settings from the left-hand navigation.
- Select the Navigation tab. If Panopto appears in the bottom section, click the 3 dots and select Enable.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Navigation window and select Save.
