Moving Videos from Moodle ISU to ISU Canvas with Panopto for Faculty

Description

When course content is imported into ISU Canvas from a Moodle ISU backup, the links to videos stored in Panopto are broken. This is because the video link is referencing a Panopto folder that is associated with a Moodle ISU course. In order to link the videos to an ISU Canvas course, you will need to make a reference copy for a single video, or Batch Copy multiple videos. Reference copies refer back to the original source video but with a completely clean slate of viewer-contributed metadata such as the number of times the video as been viewed.

Instructions

  1. Access the ISU Canvas course that you wish to add the videos to and select Panopto from the navigation menu. Note: If the Panopto video tool is not in your left-hand navigation, it may not have been enabled for your course. To enable it, follow these steps:
    1. Select Settings from the left-hand navigation menu
    2. Select the Navigation tab. If Panopto appears in the bottom section, click the 3 dots and select Enable
    3. Scroll to the bottom of the Navigation window and select Save
  2. From the left-hand navigation window, select Panopto
  3. In the Panopto window, you will see a course folder for your ISU Canvas course - click the triangle to open the options
  4. Select MoodleISU and in the top search menu, search for your Moodle ISU course that contains the original Panopto videos
  5. If you have multiple videos for a course, select the first video in the list by hovering over the upper, left corner of the video and clicking in the box that appears
  6. A new list of tool icons will be displayed under the Search Results - click on the square to Select All the videos
  7. Click on the Copy icon
  8. A Copy video(s) to window will open. Click on the triangle to open the selection menu.
  9. Click the triangle next to Canvas to expand the list of courses. Scroll to find your ISU Canvas course and select it
  10. Select the Copy icon. After all the selected videos have been copied to the Panopto folder for your course you can click anywhere to close that window.

Note: All of the videos stored in the Panopto course folder can be viewed by everyone enrolled in the course by clicking on Panopto in the navigation menu. However, only instructors have access to create, modify and share videos. Students only have access to search for and view videos that are within the course folder. If you wish to link specific videos into specific modules, you will need to embed the video links via the Panopto LTI External Tool. See the article, Panopto: Adding Videos in ISU Canvas for Faculty for step-by-step instructions. After you have linked videos into the modules, you may wish to go back to Settings>Navigation and drag Panopto down to the list of items that are hidden from students so that they can only access the videos from the direct links within the course modules.

Note: If did not embed videos via Panopto in your Moodle ISU course, these steps will not apply. See the article, Panopto: Adding Videos in ISU Canvas for Faculty for adding videos into your ISU Canvas course.
