Using the Panopto LTI in ISU Canvas

Description

This article provides instructions on how to use the Panopto LTI/External Tool in ISU Canvas at Idaho State University (ISU). The Panopto LTI can be used by faculty to easily integrate and manage Panopto videos within their course modules and assignments. With this tool, video access can be streamlined by embedding videos directly in  Canvas.

Guide Navigation

Using the Panopto LTI

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course and select Modules or Assignments where you want to add the Panopto tool.
  2. Select the + button to add a new item to the module.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select External Tool.
  4. Choose Panopto LTI from the list of available tools.
  5. A Panopto window will open - select an existing video or upload a new one.
  6. After selecting a video or uploading one, choose Insert. This will add a link to Panopto in your module or assignment.
  7. Save or Publish the changes to make the tool available to students.

The LTI tool can be used to embed Panopto videos in most assignments and modules, but limitations may apply depending on the specific settings of the assignment (e.g., file size restrictions) or permissions in your Canvas course. It’s best to test the integration in different contexts to ensure smooth functionality.

Configuring Permissions in Panopto

Typically, videos should be set to “Anyone with the link” or accessible to specific groups within your institution. However, before embedding a Panopto video in Canvas, ensure the video’s permissions are set appropriately. You may need to adjust the video’s privacy settings to allow access to students.

Enabling Captions

  1. To enable captions in Panopto, first upload your video to the platform. Panopto automatically generates AI captions for most videos within a few minutes.
  2. To review or edit captions, click the video in Panopto, go to the Captions tab, and select Edit to make any adjustments.
  3. If captions aren't automatically generated, you can manually upload a caption file in supported formats (like .vtt or .srt). Make sure to publish the captions so they appear when students view the video.

If you want ADA-compliant, Closed Caption format for your videos, please contact Captioning Services at captioning@isu.edu

Editing, Moving and/or Deleting Panopto Videos

Editing Panopto Videos Directly Within Canvas
You cannot edit Panopto videos directly within Canvas. To make any edits (such as trimming, adding captions, or modifying video content), you must do so within the Panopto platform. After editing, the changes will automatically be reflected in the embedded video within Canvas.

Moving or Deleting Panopto Videos
If you move or delete the video in Panopto, the embedded video link in Canvas will no longer work. It’s important to ensure that any video you wish to keep accessible remains in the same location and is not deleted.

Viewing User Statistics

Viewership and engagement metadata are collected in the Panopto platform. Panopto provides analytics on who watched the video, when, and for how long. You can view these metrics by accessing the video in Panopto’s analytics section. To view user statistics:

  1. In your course, click on the link to the video you wish to check.
  2. Click on the Watch in Panopto arrow in the lower right corner of the video.
  3. In the upper right corner, expand the More icon, represented by three vertical dots and then select Stats.
