Guide Navigation

Creating a New Quiz

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignment page.
  2. Click the Add Quiz button.
  3. In the Choose a Quiz Engine screen, select the New Quizzes option. To save your quiz engine selection for your course, check the Remember my choice for this course checkbox.
  4. Click the Submit button. Note: You can reset your quiz engine choice from the Quiz Options menu at any time.
  5. In the Assignment Name field, enter the name of your quiz. Enter quiz details, the total points possible, select the assignment group, and choose how the grade is displayed to students.
  6. To remove this quiz from final grade calculations, click the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade checkbox.
  7. In the Assign area, you can assign the quiz to students, add due dates, and add availability dates.
  8. To save your quiz, click the Save button. To save and publish your quiz, click the Save & Publish button. Clicking the Save or Save & Publish button returns you to the page where you opened the quiz.

Note: The points possible set on the assignment details page is the total points possible for the quiz. Points set per question determine points earned for correct answers. Points earned for correct answers are totaled and divided by the sum of the total question points for the quiz. That percentage is then used to calculate the final score based on the total points on the assignment details page.

Adding all questions or a random set of questions to a New Quiz

  1. You can add multiple items to a quiz from an item bank in New Quizzes. These questions display in random order. Depending on the number of items you include from your item bank, students may view different questions when taking the quiz.
  2. In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignment page.
  3. To add all items or a random set from an item bank, find the quiz you want to open. To open New Quizzes from an existing quiz, click the Options icon and then click the Build link.
  4. Click the Item Banks button and click the name of the item bank you wish to use.

  7. To use all items from the item bank, select the Use all questions option.
  8. To randomly select a specific number of items, click the Randomly select questions option and enter the number of questions to use in the Number of questions field.
  9. To adjust the amount of points awarded per question, enter the number in the Points per question field.
  10. To save your settings, click the Done button.

Adding Accommodations to New Quizzes

  1. From within your course, in Course Navigation, click on the Quizzes link. Note: You can also access quizzes from the Assignments page.
  2. To add student accommodations, locate any existing New Quiz. Then click the Options icon (3 dots) and click the Build link.
  3. Click on the Moderate tab.
  4. Click on the student name link of the student you wish to enable an accommodation for. Alternatively, you can use the Search field to find a specific student. Note: Only one accommodation can be set per student.
  5. Accommodations options are as follows:
    1. Additional Attempts: In the Additional Attempts menu, select the number of additional attempts you wish to allow a student.
    2. Time Adjustments - granting additional test time, removing the time limit, and adding time using a time multiplier. Note: The "Until" date and time setting for a quiz always overrides any time-based accommodations. Therefore, instructors may need to adjust the "Until" date and time in order to create a large enough timing window to allow for the accommodation.
      1. To add a time multiplier, select the Time limit multiplier option in the time adjustments menu. Then enter the multiplier in the Time limit multiplier field.
      2. Alternatively, you may select the Give additional time option in the time adjustments menu. Then use the Hours and Minutes fields to add additional time.
      3. To remove the time limit, select the Remove time limit (unlimited) option in the time adjustment menu.
    3. Reduce answer choices: Click the Reduced Answer Choices toggle. This removes one incorrect answer from all multiple-choice questions with four or more options. To apply the changes, click the Save button. You can also click the Edit icon next to the student's name and then click the Reduced Answer Choices toggle on. To apply the changes, click the Apply button.
  6. Click the Save button to save all setting changes. Once you have saved the settings, you will be able to view the student's accommodations in the Accommodations column.

Important Note: Accommodations added to New Quizzes apply to all quizzes in a course for a student. However, the instructor will not see the accommodation added to the other quizzes until the student has accessed the quiz that the accommodation was initially added to.

It may be helpful to remind the student with an additional time accommodation to start the quiz early enough to allow for the extended time so that they are not cut off when the "Until" date and time is reached.  For example, if an accommodation allows a student to receive 1.5x time on an hour-long quiz that closes at 7:00pm, that student needs to begin the quiz no later than 5:30pm in order to receive their full additional time accommodation.

Using SpeedGrader in New Quizzes

Instructors can grade individual New Quizzes questions using SpeedGrader. Most quiz items are graded automatically after a student submits the quiz. However, essay and file upload questions must be graded manually.

  • Questions that require manual grading display a border and Waiting for grade text.

  1. From your course, in Course Navigation, click the Grades link.
  2. Find the quiz you want to grade, then click any grade cell for the quiz.
  3. To open the Grade Detail Tray, click the Grade Detail Tray icon, then click the SpeedGrader link in the Grade Detail Tray.
  4. To enable grading by one question at a time, click the SpeedGrader Settings icon and click the Options link.
  5. Click the Grade by question checkbox. Then click the Save Settings button.
  6. To leave additional comments on the question, click the Comment icon.
  7. To give a student full points for an answer, click the Correct button.
  8. To give a student no points for an answer, click the Incorrect button.
  9. You can also use the Arrow buttons to increase or decrease the score.
  10. To save the score for the question, click the Update button.
  11. To grade a student submission for the same question, click the Next Student button. To go to a previous student, click the Previous Student button. Note: SpeedGrader displays the same quiz question for the next student.

Determining which questions need to be manually graded

When grading by one quiz question at a time enabled, Canvas displays a number bar next to the quiz view panel to represent each question in your quiz. Numbers with an indicator represent questions that need to be graded manually. Canvas also displays a notification bar with the quiz questions that need to be manually viewed and assigned a grade.

Regrading a New Quiz

You can regrade a question for a quiz in New Quizzes using SpeedGrader. Regrading allows you to change the correct answer or point value for a question. The point value can also be changed for individual answers for questions with varied point values. Regrading is not available for Essay or File Upload questions. To regrade a New Quiz:

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Grades link.
  2. Find the quiz you want to regrade. Then hover the cursor over the assignment column header and click the Options icon. Click the SpeedGrader link.
  3. In any student submission, find the question you want to regrade, then click the Regrade button.
  4. To change the correct answer for a question, select the correct answer for the question. Note: The steps to change a correct answer vary based on the question type.
  5. If the question varies points by answer, you can change the point total in the Points field for each question. If the question has an overall point value, you can change the question point value in the Points field.
  6. Click the Regrade button.
  7. Select how to apply the regrade from the following options:
    1. Award points for correct answer(s) only - Note: This choice may reduce some students' scores.
    2. Award points for both current and previous correct answers
    3. Award points for any submitted answers
    4. Give everyone full credit.
  8. To save your choice and regrade the question for all current submissions, click the Regrade button.
  9. All current student submissions will be regraded. You can view the student's original score and the regraded score. Note: You many need to refresh the page to view the currently selected student's regraded scores.

You can also adjust the point value for an entire quiz using fudge points in SpeedGrader. See How do I adjust the point value for an entire quiz using fudge points in SpeedGrader? (external link)

Note: When students view their quiz results, they see a notification if their quiz has been affected. The attempt history also reflects the regraded score.

Regrade Restrictions

Quiz regrade does not apply to questions linked to a question bank since questions may be used in more than one quiz (for example a chapter quiz and a midterm). Additionally, adding or deleting answers from a question without submissions disables the option to regrade that question.

If a question has been regraded multiple times, the Award points for both corrected and previously correct answers option only awards points for the correct answer and the latest answer marked as correct.

Migrating a Classic Quiz to New Quizzes

You can migrate an individual quiz from Classic Quizzes to be used in New Quizzes from the Quizzes Index Page. Alternatively, you can bulk migrate multiple quizzes via course copy, IMSCC or QTI file course imports or API. Note: New Quizzes does not include a survey feature - therefore, surveys migrated from Classic Quizzes come over as standard quizzes in New Quizzes.

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
  2. Within the quiz you wish to migrate, click the Option icon (3 dots).
  3. Click the Migrate option.
  4. Once migrated, the quiz displays a New Quiz icon. To open the quiz, click the name of the quiz.

Notes:

  • By default, migrated quizzes are unpublished.
  • After migration to New Quizzes, Multiple Dropdown questions display as Fill in the Blank questions.
  • If a quiz is migrated multiple times, Canvas uses smart merging to decipher the question bank content that should be retained. This process helps ensure all content is retained, such as in cases where multiple users may be making edits to a quiz at the same time.
