Importing Moodle ISU Content into ISU Canvas

1. Access the ISU Canvas course that you wish to import the backup into.
2. In the  Course Navigation  menu, select  Settings .
3. In the right-hand menu, select  Import Course Content .
4. In the  Content Type  drop-down menu, select  Moodle 1.9/2/x .
5. Select the  Browse  button to select your Moodle ISU backup file. See the TigerTracks article, Backing Up a Moodle ISU Course for details on creating a backup of your course.
6. Select the Moodle ISU course backup file then select  Open . Note: The Moodle file will have a .zip or .mbz file extension.
7. Select the  Default Question Bank .
   1. If your ISU Canvas course currently contains a question bank, select the question bank from the drop-down menu.
   2. If you do not have a question bank in your ISU Canvas course, you can create a new question bank by selecting  Create new question bank.  For more information about creating and using question banks in Canvas, please refer to the article,  How do I create a question bank in a course?    3. Note : Question Categories from Moodle ISU will lose their hierarchical organization and become a list of alphabetically-arranged individual question bank folders in ISU Canvas.
8. Choose the content you want to import - to move all of the course content in the backup file select the  All Content  radio button. If you want to select specific content, click the  Select specific content  radio button .
9. It is not necessary to select the  Adjust events and due dates  checkbox because the course participation start and end dates are determined by the ISU Registrar.  Note:  After your content has been imported, you can use the  Edit Assignment Dates  option in the Assignments folder. 10. Select  Import  to import the Moodle ISU course backup into Canvas. When importing content, a message displays explaining that importing the same course content or export package more than once overwrites any existing content in the course. 
11. Click the  Add to Import Queue  button. The  Content imports  section displays the  Status  and  Progress  of your import.
    1. If you choose to select specific content in your course, the current job will show as  Waiting for selection  which means you must select the content you want to import. See the article,  How do I select specific content as part of a course import? (external link)
    2. If you no longer want to select specific content and want to import all content instead, click the  Select Content  button and simply select all content and groups available for importing.
12. When your import is complete, the status displays as  Completed .
    1. A  Partially Completed  status indicates the import contains errors. To view the specific error(s), click the  View Issues  button. For example, Moodle ISU Announcements will display as an error since that is not a tool supported by Canvas.
    2. If an import is unsupported or otherwise cannot be imported, the status displays as  Failed . To view the specific error(s), click the  View Issues  button.
13. Upon completion, you can access the imported course content by selecting  Modules  from the  Course Navigation .
