Description
Deleting unused questions in your Moodle ISU course before you create a backup will make your import into ISU Canvas go more smoothly. It will also ensure that you are not importing extra items that will take up your course storage space.
Instructions
Important Note: If your quizzes are set to randomly select questions from a category, you will need to change the quizzes to select all the questions from the category before deleting questions. When questions are pulled randomly, the Usage columns will not show that the questions are in use.
- Request a TEMP Moodle Course, so you can make changes without impacting previous student data: Moodle ISU: Request a Temporary Course
- Go to your Question Bank
- In your Moodle ISU course, select More... (at the top of the course).
- In the drop-down menu, select Question Bank.
- You can delete questions from the entire question bank, or work through the categories.
- Deleting questions from the entire question bank.
- Check that the drop-down menu at the top is set to Questions.
- In the Select a category drop-down, select the highest level category.
- This is usually Top for CourseName.
- In Search options select Also show questions from subcategories.
- The Usage column will have a 0 if the question is not used in the course.
- On the left of the question, select the box of all the questions not used in the course.
- At the bottom of the page, in With selected drop-down menu, select Delete.
- You will see a confirmation page with a list of all the questions you have selected.
- If you have accidentally selected a question that is used in a quiz there will be an asterisk * in front of it.
- If you see an asterisk and the error message, select Cancel, and reselect the questions.
- If you do not see any error messages, select Delete.

- In the top drop-down menu, select Categories.
- You will see a list of your categories with the number of questions in the category in parentheses ( ).
- You can select the Trash can icon to delete categories without questions.
- Questions must be deleted or moved before deleting the category.
- Select a category by selecting the Name of the category.
- The Usage column will have a 0 if the question is not used in the course.
- On the left of the question, select the box of all the questions not used in the course.
- At the bottom of the page, in With selected drop-down menu, select Delete.
- You will see a confirmation page with a list of all the questions you have selected.

Why are some of my questions grayed out?

Questions that are grayed out are called "old questions".

These are questions that are still used in a quiz, but were accidentally deleted.
Can old questions be restored?

Yes. Select the Edit dropdown menu for the question, and then select Restore.

Yes, you will need to restore each question individually.
